Central Falls aims for extreme makeover
Central Falls High School is a contestant for ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: School Edition.” School officials say they submitted a video application at the request of the show’s producers. They think they have a good shot thanks to a recent facilities review that revealed millions of dollars in needed building repairs and upgrades.
Of course there’s also the national attention they’ve received for a state-ordered turnaround plan that led to the dismissal of the entire high school faculty. That sparked a national debate over whether teachers are to blame when their students do poorly on standardized tests.
Under the turnaround plan up to 50% of the teachers can be rehired. The Central Falls Teachers’ Union has challenged the firings in federal court.
